Why Solid Oak Herringbone Was Chosen for This Stockholm Apartment

Herringbone parquet is one of the most sought-after floors in Stockholm's older apartments — the pattern belongs to the city's turn-of-the-century architecture and suits renovated period homes as well as newer residences. For this project, solid oak herringbone was chosen over an engineered construction: the client wanted a floor with a full wear layer that can be sanded and refinished several times over decades of use.

The 16×68 mm format is a classic herringbone block in a smaller scale. The narrow block creates a dense, elegant pattern that works very well with the apartment's room sizes — larger formats can feel heavy in rooms under 20–25 m², while the 68 mm width keeps the rhythm of the pattern even in hallways and smaller bedrooms.

Unfinished Oak Herringbone — Sanded and Lacquered on Site

The floor was supplied as unfinished solid oak herringbone — without any factory finish. The blocks were glued to the subfloor, the entire surface was sanded flat and then lacquered on site. This is the traditional way of installing solid herringbone parquet in Sweden, and it offers three concrete advantages:

A perfectly flat surface. Because sanding takes place after installation, all micro-differences in height between the blocks disappear — the floor becomes one continuous, mirror-even surface.

Free choice of finish. The client decides on the finish once the floor is in place.
