Parquet Board Dimensions & Sizes Guide — Chevron, Herringbone & Solid Oak | PerfektoWood

Parquet dimensions - thickness, width and length of parquet boards

Parquet dimensions — the thickness, width, and length of the planks — are one of the most important decisions when planning a wood floor installation. They directly affect the visual scale of the pattern, the stability of the floor, and its suitability for your specific room and installation conditions.

PerfektoWood manufactures solid and engineered oak parquet in a range of standard dimensions. Solid and engineered are the two construction types, while chevron, herringbone, and straight boards are the formats in which parquet is produced — chevron and herringbone are available in both solid and engineered construction. This guide covers all standard parquet dimensions in one place.

Parquet Thickness in mm

Standard parquet thickness ranges from 12 mm to 22 mm, depending on the construction type and format. Engineered parquet — boards, chevron and herringbone — ranges from 12 mm to 20,5 mm, with engineered chevron at 12 mm or 15 mm and engineered herringbone at 12 mm or 15 mm. Solid oak formats — boards, chevron and herringbone — are available in 16 mm or 22 mm thickness. On engineered parquet, the wear layer — the solid oak top that can be sanded and refinished — is 3 mm to 5,5 mm.

Thicker parquet allows more re-sanding cycles over its lifetime, while thinner formats suit rooms with limited floor height or underfloor heating. For help selecting the right thickness for your project, see our guide on how to choose oak parquet flooring thickness.

Chevron Parquet Dimensions

Chevron planks are cut at a precise angle — 45° or 60° — and must be manufactured to exact tolerances to ensure the V-point aligns perfectly during installation. PerfektoWood chevron parquet is available in both engineered and solid oak construction.

Engineered chevron parquet dimensions

Engineered chevron parquet standard dimensions (oak)
Thickness (mm) Width (mm) Length (mm) Angle Best for
12 140 850 60° Large rooms, open spaces
12 140 820 45° Large rooms, open spaces
15 140 690 60° Medium rooms
15 140 660 45° Medium rooms
12 140 550 60° Smaller rooms, hallways
12 140 520 45° Smaller rooms, hallways

Tip: Longer planks create a more dramatic V pattern and suit larger rooms. Shorter planks give a finer, more traditional chevron effect. For full guidance on choosing the right size and angle, see our chevron wood flooring guide.

Solid oak chevron parquet dimensions

Solid oak chevron is manufactured from a single piece of hardwood, sanded unfinished, in Select and Select Plius grades. Dimensions differ by angle:

45° chevron — a classic and widely used pattern that creates a balanced and elegant visual effect, suitable for both modern and traditional interiors.

Herringbone Parquet Dimensions

Herringbone planks have straight 90° ends and are arranged in a staggered zigzag pattern. The plank proportions — the ratio of width to length — determine the visual density and scale of the herringbone pattern. PerfektoWood herringbone parquet is available in both engineered and solid oak construction.

Engineered herringbone parquet dimensions

Engineered herringbone parquet standard dimensions (oak)
Thickness (mm) Width (mm) Length (mm) Ratio (W:L) Best for
12 140 895 1:6.4 Large rooms, luxury interiors
15 140 720 1:5.1 Medium to large rooms
12 140 595 1:4.3 Most room sizes, classic look
15 140 595 1:4.3 Most room sizes, classic look

Solid oak herringbone parquet dimensions

Solid oak herringbone blocks are available in two formats: 16 mm thick × 68 mm wide (six lengths from 204 mm to 612 mm) and 22 mm thick × 70 mm wide (four lengths from 300 mm to 500 mm). Longer blocks create a larger pattern repeat; shorter blocks give a denser, more traditional zigzag:

Solid oak herringbone standard dimensions
Thickness (mm) Width (mm) Length (mm) Ratio (W:L)
16 68 204 1:3
16 68 272 1:4

Solid Oak Parquet Dimensions

Solid oak parquet is manufactured from a single piece of hardwood. Standard dimensions:

  • Thickness: 16 mm or 22 mm
  • Width: 50 mm – 140 mm
  • Length: 350 mm – 900 mm

For full specifications, see our solid oak parquet dimensions guide.

Engineered Oak Parquet Dimensions

Engineered oak flooring consists of a real oak top layer bonded to a multi-layer plywood base. This construction allows for wider and longer boards than solid parquet, with greater dimensional stability. Standard dimensions:

  • Thickness: 12 mm – 20,5 mm
  • Width: 80 mm – 350 mm
  • Length: 400 mm – 2400 mm (boards)

For full specifications, see our engineered wood flooring dimensions guide.

How Dimensions Affect Visual Appearance

  • Wider planks — show more natural grain, create a bolder contemporary look.
  • Narrower planks — give a more traditional, fine-grained appearance.
  • Longer planks — make rooms appear larger, suit open-plan spaces.
  • Shorter planks — create a denser pattern, suit smaller or traditional rooms.

For chevron and herringbone patterns, plank length also determines the scale of the V or zigzag — longer planks create a larger, more dramatic pattern repeat.

Moisture Content and Dimensional Stability

All PerfektoWood parquet is kiln-dried to 8% (±2%) moisture content before leaving the factory. This is critical for dimensional stability — wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, so a consistent moisture content at installation minimises movement after laying. For installation and acclimatisation requirements, see our parquet construction and installation guide.

FAQ — Parquet Dimensions

What is the standard thickness of oak parquet?

Standard parquet thickness ranges from 12 mm to 22 mm. Engineered parquet — boards, chevron and herringbone — ranges from 12 mm to 20,5 mm. Solid oak formats — boards, chevron and herringbone — are 16 mm or 22 mm thick. The wear layer on engineered parquet is 3 mm to 5,5 mm of solid oak on top of the plywood base.

What is the standard width of chevron parquet?

PerfektoWood engineered chevron parquet planks are 140 mm wide as standard, with lengths from 520 mm to 850 mm. Solid oak chevron planks are 70 mm to 120 mm wide, with lengths from 410 mm to 710 mm depending on the angle and size selected.

What chevron dimensions work best for small rooms?

For smaller rooms and hallways, shorter chevron planks (520 mm or 550 mm) create a proportionate pattern. Larger rooms benefit from longer planks (690 mm to 850 mm) for a more dramatic effect.

What is parquet dimensions in cm?

PerfektoWood engineered chevron parquet standard dimensions in cm: 1.2 × 14 × 52 cm, 1.2 × 14 × 55 cm, 1.5 × 14 × 66 cm, 1.5 × 14 × 69 cm, 1.2 × 14 × 82 cm, 1.2 × 14 × 85 cm. Engineered herringbone parquet: 1.2 × 14 × 59.5 cm, 1.5 × 14 × 59.5 cm, 1.5 × 14 × 72 cm and 1.2 × 14 × 89.5 cm. Solid herringbone: 1.6 × 6.8 cm (lengths 20.4 – 61.2 cm) or 2.2 × 7 cm (lengths 30 – 50 cm).

Does plank size affect installation difficulty?

Yes. Larger and longer planks require more precise subfloor preparation as any unevenness is more visible over a wider board. Chevron and herringbone patterns require very precise cutting and alignment regardless of size.
